Ok, I give up. this is the background I'll stick with. A simple gradient. I went through I dont know how many backgrounds before I gave up, NOTHING looked right behind him.
It was kind of irritating really.

this is really good. a lot of people have a problem with making them look so stiff. its a marine creature, it's fluid, and here it looks like he's just casually flopping his tail up and down. very good work!
